Caution: Changed Conditions Ahead

I was walking to Victoria Park today, listening to Bright Eyes’ phenomenal album “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning,” when I came across this very fitting sign:

Changed Priorities Ahead

Changed Priorities Ahead

The first thing that struck me was how odd this road sign was, the second was how fitting it was. For in the past couple of months my priorities have changed.

I handed in notice at my job the other day. I have thrown in the towel on the whole … soul-destroying … soho … advertising …  game.

Regular readers of my blog (of which there are probably none, as I myself am not a regular writer) would know that it is the canvas upon which I throw around ideas, grievances, hope, dreams, et al. Regular readers would recognise the familiar recurring themes that haunt me, i.e. the quandary of trying to live life as a compacter while working in an industry that flogs people shit they don’t need and can’t afford.

If the unexamined life is not worth living, as an old Greek guy once believed, then my blog is the lens through which I express my life’s worth.

I have been semi-intentionally quiet on the blogging front for a while now, despite my new year’s resolution to write a blog a week. This is because for a while now I didn’t really have anything to say. That’s not to say I haven’t been making the most of my time overseas … Jess and I have been doing some absolutely marvellous things, packing our days full of wonder. But this blog, it as clear to me now, is not so much a travel journal as a foil for me to bounce ideas off.

Well I have something to report.

I have decided to get out of the whole production and post-production game entirely. Presto, Hey Finito!

I have come to the conclusion that it is not enough to work in advertising or television and create more meaningless content, hoping against hope to one day make something worthwhile, something that inspires, educates, and broadens horizons.

So I’m getting out! I have handed in my notice and intend to go back home and do a Masters of Development Studies at the UNSW, and get into ‘third sector’ work … i.e. NGO work.

Beware! Changed Priorities Ahead!
