A Proper Travel Diary

At the risk of being swallowed up in my own self-indulgent posturings of too-flowery prose and forced witticisms, I have included, for your viewing pleasure, an ACTUAL UPDATE on my travels thus far – with pictures!

I promise to keep my absurd ruminations on life to a minimum, lest my ego inflate too much and I become swallowed up in its gravitational pull.

Here is a list of Bands I will miss beause I happen to be in the one place they always tour to (Europe) and not in the one place they never tour to (Australia):

Powderfinger, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, Sarah Blasko, Tilly & The Wall, Hot Chip, Cat Empire, Blue King Brown and Sara Tindley + Damien Rice, The Horrors, Paul Kelly, The Beautiful Girls, The Panics. Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Hoodoo Gurus, Hilltop Hoods, Klaxons, The Shins, The Dirty Three, Airbourne and The Ride + OK Go, Cut Copy, Gotye.

Kings of Leon, Groove Armada, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Built to Spill, Jose Gonzales, The Go! Team.

And most painful of all … DAFT PUNK!!!

And you know what the kicker is…? They are all going over to Australia after being in Europe …. and because of the gay time I chose to travel, I get to miss every single one of them! F$*K YEAH!

I am seriously considering flying home for Christmas, at least that way I could see Daft Punk and Kings of Leon….

THE JOY OF A GREAT BOOK…

The joy of a great book is like the joy of living itself – the joy of existence.

From the first page to the final sentence, a great book immerses the reader. It ensnares them in the reality of the narrative, drenching them in the drama, requiring nothing short of their total emotional investment in the lives of the main characters.

Good books are many-numbered and frequently-forgotten. But great books are few and far between.

If you want something done right….

Following my rant and rave about my inability to find a decent coffee in Berlin (which was verbal as well as virtual) I have been invited to come to a trendy Kreuzberg cafe this Thursday morning and “show the staff how to make a coffee!”

At the very least, I’ll get a good soya coffee out of it!

More updates to follow. Perhaps I can transform the Berlin coffee scene … one shop at a time. I’ll be like some superhero, righting wrongs everywhere …. no, better yet … I’ll be “the little snob who could” … chuffing my way through Kreuzberg saying:

“I-think-i-can-i-think-i-can” …. or perhaps: “Your-cof-fee’s-crap-i’ll-show-you-why-your-cof-fee’s-crap…”

Hmmm, that’s sure to get me deported!

When the ‘Experience’ isn’t quite ‘Overseas’…

Before I left New Zealand, I had family members and friends wishing me well on my “OE”. For those unacquainted with the term, “OE” stands for “Overseas Experience,” and is a term peculiar to NZ I think, because its never used in Australia. I guess it is interchangeable with the term “Gap Year”. Both though, are ill-equipped to describe my current travel intentions.

My Kingdom for a Coffee…

It seems as though you can’t find a good coffee anywhere in Europe. Identity-fraud is rife within the EU. Purveyors of luke-warm monstrosities of too-much foam and super-heated milk pass themselves off as “coffee-shops” and “cafe bars” with wanton disregard for the truth. Where is the ACCC when you need them?!

N.B. The author realises the ACCC is the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and as such would have no jurisdiction over the EU member-states, let alone individual businesses within those states – this point is made merely for effect, comedic or otherwise.
